Having long modeled my visual practice on the work habits of musicians, something unique has become clear. Over 3 decades of making paintings, films and sculptures, I now produce work, that aside from its inherent visual and conceptual concerns, often has the ability to self-produce rhythm and sound. The videos have intricate scores on which they rely and the sculptures often contain automated beaters that hum, clank and strike the drum-like components from which they are made. This project highlights the sounds, words and musique concrete of my practice as a formal point of departure for a new series of short, stop motion animations, projections, paintings and sculptures that reflect the sometimes tragic, yet endearing and often humorous counterpoints to the life of an artist in NYC today. The Rainy Suns project is an illuminated soundtrack for our shared times, post Covid isolation.
